Finding Inspiration For Your Content Writing | Episode 004 | Marketing Of The Minds

Finding Inspiration For Your Content Writing

Writing quality content is the single most important aspect of internet marketing as a whole. The content you write determines whether or not your target audience decides to move ahead with you and your business, or to bypass you in favor of a competitor. All too often we as business owners and marketers throw out articles left and right, optimized for particular keywords just to bolster our own backlinking structure but we seem to forget the audience that we are writing for. Finding the right inspiration can help us to break out of that creative rut that we so often get stuck in, and communicate with our potential customers on a much higher level.

Take Lots Of Pictures!

This might seem a bit odd, but it really does make a difference. For many of us business owners, our content is about something that we do for 8 hours at least, every day. It sure doesn’t take long to reach the point when we feel as though we have written everything there is to know about the topic. But sometimes all we need is a slight change in perspective. That’s where taking pictures comes in! Set aside a day and simply take a camera, or a phone, and take pictures of everything you do that day. It’ll be awkward and embarrassing, but just do it! Then at the end of the day, sit down, and look through the images you took that day. Take the time to tie them all together with a mental narrative of what you were doing, or what you were thinking at that point in time. I promise that using this simple trick will help you see the daily humdrum in a different light. Helping you to connect yourself back to that passion you had for work. When you can write with that passion and perspective it will resonate with your consumers!

Get Outside!

We’re certainly never going to be inspired sitting at the desk, staring at the stiflingly silent beige walls surrounding us. We need to get outside! Going for a simple stroll either in nature, or just across town can help open our eyes to the possibilities that surround us everywhere. Just a little while ago when the lockdown was put into place I went on a little stroll through downtown. I took the time to take pictures of all the closed signs on the businesses. That opened my eyes to a world of possibilities for new content. There were countless needs that I had been ignoring in my content, simply because I hadn’t thought about them being there!

Speak From Experience!

Writing about something that you have never done, almost never comes out the way it should. The writing is stale, and practically lifeless sitting on a page. For example, reading a textbook. Textbook stories are terrible! They try to be interesting because they are talking about cars or something, but really they are just painfully dry to read, because the author isn’t speaking from their own experiences. Business books however are often a little different. They address the same topics, but in a much different way they speak from heartfelt experiences that connect with you in a way that a textbook never can. One of my favorite examples of this kind of writing is Leadership and Self Deception by the Arbinger Institute. The lessons and connection you develop from writing that is heartfelt and based on real experience stays with you for far longer than the textbook variety.

Use Your Competitors!

Just because you are competing for the same market does not mean that you are enemies. Don’t be afraid to check out what they’ve got going on on their pages! Being competitors you are going to be targeting the same market, with typically similar products. When you look at their content it is often easy to find areas where you can add to what they have said, or even improve upon it. So take that and run with it! Take those thoughts and write content based around it that is uniquely yours. Your own authority will continue to grow in the eyes of your customers as you constantly push to get more information in their hands.

Do Something

Last but not least, Do something. Just do something. You’ll never get over a writer’s block just by sitting. Go do something and you never know where the inspiration may come from. Whether it be your grandmother, or an unsuspecting pigeon walking around outside Harbor Freight. They just won’t come while you’re staring at your computer screen watching the cursor blink. Best of luck to you!
